Exercise Poster Series

The Goal

This series analyses the range of definitions of the word ‘exercise’ and uses visual elements to represent the complexity of the context surrounding them. The trend combining the three iterations is the relationship between the actions of individuals and the social implications that are attached to each definition. Using visual representation, complexities within everyday experiences can be exemplified to bring new ideas and perspectives.

The first iteration explores the immmediate definition of exercise. Often a part of many people’s daily life, this design alludes to the action of exercise. lifting weight, analysing the numbers, and progressing through the stages of growth. The use of representational imagery allows the viewer to instantly make the connection to the meaning of the piece.

The second iteration confronts the viewer with a more raw definition of what it can mean to preform exercise. The forms in the foreground represent the effects of exercise on the human body. The background is layered with nutrition fact labels highligthing the potential obsession with the tiny bits of data attached to the food that we eat. This perspective draws attention to the intersection between exercise and the healthy or unhealthy relationship it can have to self perception and body dysmorphia.

The third iteration allows a less common definition of exercise to be brought to the forefront. Protest is the most pure form of exercsing ones rights. Speaking, gathering, and fighting for change is an important part of our society. Almost all actions relating to protest can be attributed with one word.
